Dogs in OC

We are in OC for the summer and have dogs. The place we live in has a very small yard so we took them to the park at 6th & Ocean last night. As we were playing with them we saw a small "no dogs" sign on the other side of the park from where we came in. Are dogs allowed there? The area is not clearly marked at all entrances. If not where can we take the dogs in that general area to stretch their legs. We clean-up after them if they happen to go to the bathroom while we are there.
