Re: Flying Saucer

There was an explosion of gasoline vapor in the summer of '73 that blew the mechanic overboard and badly damaged the stern deck. This occurred as the boat was heading to sea and was in the bay near 2nd street. Chris was able to drive the boat to the Yacht Club pier (as the two outside motors kept running - according to Chris himself) where the Coast Guard and the fire dept extinguished the subsequent fire. Many of the passengers jumped overboard and were picked up by other boats and the Coast Guard.
No one was killed, although several people were taken the Shore Memorial complaining of shortness of breath, or chest pains.
Chris had the Saucer towedback to the restaurant, and later to Holtz. It was repaired and back in service next summer. The appearance of the afterdeck was altered; the twin-fins were gone and a larger hatch installed over the engine room.
What ever happened to the Flying Pony?
